New World Record for Sunkid in Italy with the World’s Longest Covered Conveyor!

The Alps, Rocky Mountains or Pyrenees are by no means the only regions offering winter sports fun.

There are numerous other lesser-known areas in which the winter sports trend is booming too. One of these is the village of Ovindoli, located 130 km east of Rome in the Italian Apennine Mountains. Perched at an altitude of 1,375m above sea level, the village boasts a population of 1,200 habitants and is a fully fledged ski area with 10 lifts and 22 km of pistes ranging from an altitude of 1,400 m right up to 2,200 m.

Since autumn 2005, the ski area located at the foot of the “Monte della Magnola” mountain has two new attractions to boast of: a new Sunkid Wonder Carpet conveyor in the “Alien Park” snowboard funpark and the longest covered conveyor in the world located in the ski school practice area.

The longest covered conveyor in the world – 222 metres!

Hailing from the Tyrol in Austria, Sunkid has been established as a pioneer in the branch of mountain conveyor transport for over ten years now. And there was an extra reason to celebrate on the tenth anniversary of the company’s foundation – a brand new world record!  Having had several extremely bad experiences with other conveyor manufacturers in the previous winter season, the management of the “Monte Magnola Impianti Srl” lift facilities made a conscious decision to go for safety, quality and the very latest technology.  The new Sunkid Wonder Carpet stretches over 222m and is primarily used to transport ski school guests to the practice piste. Furthermore, the management opted for a conveyor width of 75cm, thus enabling their disabled guests to use the new facility as well. This wider conveyor is particularly appreciated by monoskiers who can also use the conveyor to travel back up the mountain quickly and comfortably. The conveyor is driven by a 30 KW motor and a transport speed of 0.6 m/sec gives the facility a theoretical maximum transport capacity of 1,400 guests per hour.

Protection from Wind and Precipitation Thanks to the Sunkid Conveyor Cover

In the Ovindoli region, snowfalls of up to a metre and stormy weather are no rarity. The conveyor was therefore covered all along its 222m length to offer the guests optimal comfort during their ascent. The cover was constructed using the tried-and-tested modular construction method and is 1.8m wide with an internal height of 2.2m. This modular construction method allows for an optimal transport, construction and storage of the conveyor. The central skeleton of the cover is an aluminium construction which is then filled out with high-grade Plexiglas window panes. Both sides of the cover are equipped with 1.2m-wide openings every 1.8m which can be closed securely with a hard-wearing roll-down PVC doors. The entry and exit areas of the conveyor can also be secured over-night with roll-down doors. The cover protects guests from the wind and cold as well as all sorts of precipitation and renders the maintenance and service of the conveyor considerably less time-consuming. For example, the cover means that there is no need to clear snow from the conveyor before the start of service.

108m Sunkid Wonder Carpet in the “Alien Snowboard” Fun Park

The “Alien Park” is a fun park boasting numerous kickers, halfpipes and all manner of other attractions tailor-made for freestyle snowboarders. The 108m Sunkid conveyor represents the central lift system serving the fun park. The fun park guests are transported on a conveyor equipped with a Blue Eye running surface, thus guaranteeing a maximum slip-free grip on the conveyor. The facility is powered by a 15 kW motor, boasts a conveyor-width of 600mm and offers a theoretical maximum transport capacity of 1,400 guests per hour.
