probably the most extraordinary ski resort in the world

500 meters ski slope and three Sunkid Moving Carpet

Place: København /Year: 2019 / Product: Moving Carpet / Dry Slopes

Denmark is a flat country, and the highest elevation in the country is Møllehøj in eastern Jutland, which is just 170 meters high. Bad conditions for the approximately 600,000 Danish skiers. Until now, they had to travel to the mountains of Norway or even further. Now there is a great alternative - but with an unusual view: instead of a mountain panorama, athletes can expect a view over Copenhagen.

Recently, probably the most unusual ski slope in the world was opened in Denmark: the CopenHill. Denmark now has a sports facility that is second to none. On the roof of the new Amager Bakke waste incineration plant in Copenhagen, a unique recreational area and sports center have been created that, among other things, allows year-round skiing. Three Sunkid Moving Carpet lifts (36m, 51m and 96m) and a platter lift transport the more than 300,000 visitors expected each year to a height of 85 meters. The Tyrolean company Sunkid not only supplied the Moving Carpet conveyor belts, but also played a key role in planning the conveyor solutions and the ski slope. The track surface also differs significantly from the usual white of domestic ski slopes. On a specially developed green plastic surface from Sunkid's partner company Neveplast, year-round skiing is possible. Comparable is one of the largest year-round ski slopes in Europe, the Wunderwiese in Puchberg in Austria.

Great offer for all

In order to provide a special offer for skiing beginners as well, the slope has been divided into three areas, all of which can be reached via the conveyor belts of the Austrian world market leader. The flattest section is located in the lower part of the facility, which is of particular interest to ski beginners and the Ski School, which is also housed in the building. In addition to the ski slope, an approximately 500m long hiking trail and an 85m high climbing wall provide variety.

Electricity and heat for up to 72,000 households

Below the leisure center, one of the most modern waste incineration plants in the world generates electricity and heat for up to 72,000 households. In the process, the furnaces burn up to 400,000 tons of waste per year. With an estimated construction cost of 670 million US dollars - is there a EUR figure or should we just convert? - the plant is one of Copenhagen's most expensive infrastructure projects in recent years and plays a central role in the city's zero carbon by 2025 campaign. As a result, Amager Bakke joins the Hundertwasser-designed Spittelau waste incineration plant in the list of the world's most extraordinary factories.
